QVC is one of the world’s largest multi media retailers. In 1993 QVC, along with BskyB, launched the UK’s first TV shopping channel reaching 2.7 million homes in the UK.
As part of their 2014 £3M refurbishment plan, Austin Broady Air Conditioning were asked to install a system to help reduce the amount of energy required to keep their UPS room temperature between 18o and 21o. A traditional air conditioning system was previously being used but this was proving costly to run and maintain.
A single evaporative cooler was installed by Austin Broady in conjunction with a PLC controller. The PLC controller monitors the external conditions and also the internal humidity and temperature. It maintains the room temperature by sending a control signal to the evaporative cooler inlet and extract fans.
The evaporative cooler runs on its own 90% of the time with the existing air conditioning system acting as a failsafe backup.
They expect to see savings of approximately 90% on the running costs along with the obvious benefits from a reduction in carbon emissions.
